It’s Raining “Man Showers”

For decades, grooms have gotten the short end of the stick when it comes to pre-wedding festivities like bridal showers. Lately, however, a new trend has come onto the scene that puts the groom on a more even keel with the bride. Today’s groom is often treated to a “man shower.”

An idea that has caught on throughout the country, man showers are similar to traditional bridal showers in that the party is a time for male attendees to bond together and present the groom with lots of presents that will be useful in his new life as a husband. But that’s where the similarities end.

At a man shower, you won’t find any kitchen towels, bed linens, or other classic bridal shower presents. Instead, the groom receives testosterone-filled gifts, like power drills, hedge trimmers, and other manly presents that will make him smile. And you won’t find any frilly paper and ribbon on these gifts either. Most men simply arrive with their presents in the plastic store bags in which they came while others do their best to wrap them in a masculine manner, using newspaper and duct tape in many cases.

Stores like Lowe’s and Home Depot are catching on. They’re offering wedding gift registries that are attracting men by the droves and, as an added bonus, new couples are receiving much needed tools, gardening equipment, and other items that are rarely given at traditional bridal showers.

Gift-giving isn’t the only thing that’s different at a male-oriented shower. The man shower might be planned around a favorite Sunday football game, allowing the guys to watch while they enjoy beer and hot dogs rather than finger sandwiches and punch. The playing of video games is popular at today’s man showers as well or attendees might organize an impromptu volleyball game or other sporting event they can enjoy together. And like bridal showers, these gatherings can be appropriate for all ages.

As more and more men become involved in planning their wedding, the man shower – which usually coincides with the bridal shower and is organized by the groomsmen – seems a logical way to pay tribute to the groom who’s worked so hard alongside his bride to make their big day special. The shower also helps him experience the pre-wedding excitement that so often eludes the groom.
