Best Man Duties and Responsibilities

They say getting married is one of the most stressful events of a person’s life. In fact, it’s right up there with moving out of a house, going to prison, or being a White Sox fan. That’s the reason why every groom needs a dependable best man.

While it is an honor to be chosen as the best man, the role usually demands a bit more than just guarding the ring. If it’s your first time, chances are you do not have a clue of your duties as a best man, so this is going to be a rundown of what’s in store for you.

Before the Wedding:

While you will be the groom’s right-hand man on his big day, as the best man, you will also have to take care of some tasks before the wedding day too. For instance;

Dealing with the Bride and Groom

While weddings are a happy occasion, there are going to be times when the couple won’t seem to share your enthusiasm. This is inevitable, since it’s not unheard of for couples to be at odds with certain decisions. This is where the best man (that’s you) comes in. Be on hand and help the groom do away with all the anxiety (at the local pub) that comes with getting married.

Pitch in When Asked

When the couple doesn’t seem sure of a decision, give your advice (but only when asked; you don’t want to butt in on every matter). The important thing is for you to be there when the groom needs you, like when picking out a tux or planning the evening.

Arrange Transport

As the best man, it falls under your duties to get your main man to the church on the big day. Don’t forget to give the car a once-over just to make sure there are no surprises on the way. Delays on the wedding day are a definite no-no – you don’t want to go down in history as being the best man who was late for the ceremony.

The Wedding Rehearsal

While not all weddings require a wedding rehearsal, it’s not unheard of; so make sure you’re free to attend whenever it is planned.

Keep the Groom’s Posse in Check

As the best man, you will also need to inform the other groomsmen of their duties and keep them in the loop of any information regarding their roles. Simply put, you’re the head groomsman on your pal’s wedding day, so do it like a boss, will ya!

With all the action going on, you will probably have to pick up the wedding suits and do other tasks as required the day before. Even if you are not involved in the wedding preparations (most best men aren’t), always remember, a good (best) man never waits to be asked; he knows what he has signed up for and he’s ready to jump in and get his hands dirty.

And don’t Forget…

  • To organize the traditional stag party, and
  • Write your best man’s speech (good luck with this one!).

The Wedding

On the wedding day, your most important task will be to get the blushing groom to the ceremony on time and (preferably) in one piece (making him look half decent wouldn’t hurt either! But hey, no one is asking you to pull down a miracle).

Keep Cash on You

It is likely that the groom won’t be in the right frame of mind on his wedding day to think about the small stuff, like keeping some extra dough on hand. This is where you need to step up and carry some readies. You will probably need them.

The Rings

This is a big one. There can’t be a wedding without the wedding ring, right? Forget /lose /get robbed of this sacred item and prepare to be hurt…very badly, by the bride (you might also have to take a punch or two from the groom, but hey in this case, you deserve it!). In the event that you do manage to lose the wedding ring, you could also have to change your name, leave the city, or start off every conversation with said couple with an apology for the rest of your life.

Sealing the Deal

You will also need to sign the marriage license as a witness, along with the maid of honor. Fortunately, you don’t need to practice for this one.

Crowd Control

It’s a wedding and the attendees are probably going to be tipsy. As the head of the groomsmen, you will need to take charge. Let the other groomsmen know of their duties and make sure all younger party members are taken care of. You could also have to step in and put some order to the wedding rabble.

The Troubleshooter

Apart from handling the caterers, the band or DJ, the videographer, and all the rest, as the master of the ceremony, you won’t really need to take the photographs at the wedding day, you will however, have to make sure that all the correct faces end up in all the correct photos.

The Toast

Not only will this be the first toast to the newlywed couple, it is also going to be a way for you to make a special corner in their hearts, which will be just for you. As the best man, our guess is that you don’t want to look like a complete moron in front of hundreds of people. To get it right, you will have to work on your best man speech even if you have the oratory skills of Barack Obama and the comedic timing of Jon Stewart. As the best man, you don’t just have to stand up and address the audience (many of whom you do not know) you have to wow them with your best man speech. So, practice, practice, and when you think you’ve got it perfect, practice some more. Don’t lie in wait, DO IT, DO IT NOW. TAKE OUT THAT PENCIL AND START WRITING, MAGGOT!

Rock the Kasbah

As the best man, it will fall upon you to get the party started. You can do that by being a good sport and being the first to hit the dancefloor. You would also have to steal a dance from the groom, the bride’s dad, and dance with the bridesmaids too.

After the Wedding Ceremony

When the ceremony and the celebrations have ended and the couple has headed off into the sunset, you might want to stay behind and gather all the gifts that “YOU” will have to deliver to their home. You might also have to drive the couple to the motel or the airport after the reception.

Ending Note

In the end, the most important thing of all is to remember to enjoy yourself in the happiest day of your best friend’s life.
